My gradual free fall from "it" girl to unemployed blogger began with a simple renovation of my condo.
About a year ago I decided to make a few cosmetic changes to the place. But, as I soon found out, these things seem to have a way of snowballing and by the time plans were finalized my designer was gently suggesting I temporarily move out to accommodate the now epic scope of the renos.
And so I started to pack. And I packed, and I packed, and I packed. Honestly, I think it took me five weeks and I don't have all that big a condo. By the time the last box was put into storage I was so sick of all the shit I'd managed to amass in my slim 31 years that I vowed to make a change.
So that's what I'm starting to do: I'm decluttering. As of today, I'm going to sell everything I own (except for a few bare essentials like my favourite Agent Provacateur bra, my Tom Waits CDs, my cat...) on eBay. And I'm going to sell everything for five bucks, no matter how grandiose or how minor the the item.
I need to move inventory fast - I've got a life to reclaim! And besides I need the money to pay for the renos.
As for why I'm unemployed, let's just say for now that this decluttering business is sort of contagious.
The First Five:
Red Purse: My Mom bought this for me, it comes with a matching wallet (included). I never really liked it. Plus, I have another red purse I like much better.
Sade, Lovers Rock CD: Who needs CDs when you can download to your hard drive or buy the songs off iTunes. I'm only going to keep "hard copies" of my favourites. This isn't one.
Whisk: I already have three; I can survive with two.
Rose Reisman's Light Vegetarian Cooking: About a decade ago I decided to go vegetarian and this is one of the first purchases I made to accommodate my new lifestyle. I lasted a month. I made one recipe from this book during vegimonth - the Lentil Loaf - and it was awful.
Arundhati Roy's The God of Small Things: This book won the Booker Prize. I expected great things. I think I marginally enjoyed it, but can't remember much about. Time to part with it.
